Week 2~ Mackenzie Arroyo

     Kseniya Simonova is a one of the most notable sand performance artists of our time. Based in Ukraine, 36 year Kseniya utilizes mediums of graphic design, video/filmography, literature and more. She is most famous for her sand animation performances. Sand art is the painting or molding of sand into an image or structure. Though sand may be used in portraying both 2 and 3 dimensional artwork, it is a very difficult medium to work with.  Simonova takes this skill one step further in her animations.  Sand animation is the real-time modeling of one picture to the next to display a composition or narrative through sifting sand. Simonova presents these performances to other people either through video documentation or to live audiences using a projector. She gained immense attention after winning the show Ukraines Got Talent, and went on to be named Merited Artist of Ukraine in 2009.
